NFIP Digital Products Policy

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is implementing a new digital products and associated policy, with goals to reduce the reliance on paper products. The policy is structured to allow the continued use of paper maps for those who prefer this method. However, for NFIP stakeholders interested in adopting the new digital processes, this policy will enable them to take full advantage of the new digital maps FEMA is producing through their Flood Map Modernization (Map Mod) Program. Within FEMA, the wish is to transition to digital processes for distributing and reading the flood maps. These new digital capabilities of the flood maps will:

  • Enable significant advantages in capability, precision, and cost;
  • Reduce costs associated with paper map production, handling and storage;
  • Encourage the use of quality local data to make administration of the NFIP more efficient and effective.

To read the policy and Fact Sheet, download the document found in the Resources section below.

NFDA supports these efforts to reduce paper and improve efficiency of flood data availability and delivery. In preparation for NFDA's next Technical Mapping Meeting with FEMA and the National Service Provider on June 20, 2008, we welcome feedback from NFDA Members and other FEMA flood map users about this policy and interest in using digital products instead of paper going forward. Please submit your comments, questions and concerns to info@nfdaflood.com. To learn more about the June 20 meeting, visit our Events Calendar or contact Greg Fisher at gfisher@firstam.com.
